“Troy, Ohio is a great place to live, work, play, and raise a family” according to Troy’s Mayor Mike Beamish, but you don’t have to take his word for it. In 2009, Troy was selected as Ohio’s Best Hometown in the Southwestern Region of Ohio by the editors of Ohio Magazine. The town received this great honor after being put through rigorous evaluations of Troy’s community spirit, education, entertainment, health and safety, business environment, and cultural and heritage and Troy came out on top. "Your achievement is especially impressive in light of the fact that Ohio is home to many of the best hometowns in America. Only one town is chosen from each of the state's five regions for this very special honor. This award recognizes Troy as among the best of the best," wrote Richard Osborne, Publisher and Editor of Ohio Magazine.
Troy-Hayner Cultural Center
Mrs. Hayner left her mansion to the community in care of the Troy City Schools with specific instructions that she wanted it turned into a library, a museum, or for other cultural or educational purposes. Her home was used as a public library for 33 years, until 1976 when a new library was opened and a proposal was made to turn the home into a cultural center. The Center offers exhibits, performing arts programs, classes in art and a variety of other subjects, and a wide range of other cultural and educational offerings. It is the gathering place for many important community functions.
The Troy-Hayner Cultural Center is operated by a Board of Governors made up of local citizens. The Center is run by four full-time and eight part-time staff members, as well as over a hundred volunteers in various positions ranging from committee members to receptionists at the front desk. Over 40,000 people visit the Center or participate in the Center’s activities annually.

Brukner Nature Center
In 1933 Clayton Brukner bought 146 acres of land along the Stillwater River and created a garden filled with natural beauty. There were wooded hills and valleys, a great variety of trees, shrubs, and wildflowers, streams and perpetually flowing springs. In 1967, Mr. Brukner unveiled his plans for creating a nature center on his land to a group representing 12 local schools and one local university. In 1974 the center was opened to the public under the direction of Bob and Joan Heidleberg.
The Brukner Nature Center has grown to a 165 acre nature preserve dedicated to environmental education and wildlife rehabilitation. The center offers six miles of trails, crossing a variety of habitats including wetland, forest, and prairie. The Interpretive Building houses, an Auditorium, and meeting rooms available for educational events. A nature shop featuring local artists and wildlife exhibit, including over 40 wildlife ambassadors are also present. The site also is home to the 1804 Idding's log home, the oldest structure in Miami County on its original site, and a wildlife rehabilitation unit to educate people with concerns about Ohio's wildlife.
