Tipp City Area Guide

The beautiful Tipp City is located in Miami County, Ohio and had a population of 9,221 as of the 2000 census.  Originally Tipp City was named Tippecanoe or Tippecanoe City, but was later renamed due to there being another city named Tippecanoe already in Ohio.  This quant area lies along Interstate 75 and is known for its growing downtown restaurant and service economy to accompany its rural and residential heritage.

History

Founded in 1840, the town of Tipp City was originally named after Presidential candidate William Henry Harrison’s nickname, Tippecanoe, which was originally derived from his heroism at the Battle of Tippecanoe.  The city itself was a popular place for boatmen traveling the Miami and Erie Canal to stop off.  Due to this fact, Tipp City had a large number of bars and a substantial red light district.  Today, the now dry canal locks can be viewed just east of downtown.

Tipp City later merged with Hyattsville and continued to grow rapidly.  However, this growth quickly slowed when railroads took the majority of business away from the canals in the 1850’s and 60’s.  Ruins of a repair shop (yard barn) for the old Inter-Urban rail system can still be seen on the outskirts of town.  Then when U.S. Highway 25 was developed and subsequently Interstate 75, construction and vibrancy were brought back into the town throughout the 20th century.
